Exilion and Reround put the reuse of building components into practice

Exilion and Reround have started a collaboration to develop an operating model for reusing building components. The aim is to make reuse as smooth as possible and get building components back into circulation. The collaboration supports Exilion's long-term sustainability work and its goal of advancing the circular economy.

“We want to find a practical operating model for getting used building components back into reuse more effectively than today. The pilot gives us an easy and concrete way to get started, while laying the groundwork for using the model more widely,” says Jussi Ojamo, Director of Real Estate at Exilion.

Starting with a concrete pilot

The collaboration begins with an inventory of building components already in storage at the Eliel and Valla properties. Reround brings the inventoried components onto its platform, giving Exilion a complete picture of them and a first-hand look at how the platform works.

Components already in storage offer an easy way to test the operating model. In the future, the same model can be used in upcoming office refurbishments, for example, where components suitable for reuse are identified before demolition and directed either to Exilion’s own use or, through Reround’s marketplace, to others.

The pilot will also produce concrete data on the financial benefits and environmental impact of these choices, making the effects of circular economy work visible.

Developing Reround together with the customer

During the pilot, Exilion will use the Reround platform and help shape its development. The experience gained will feed into the further development of both the platform and the marketplace.

“We want to make reusing building components as easy as possible for our customers. That’s why we develop the Reround platform and marketplace together with them. Working with Exilion helps us build the service around real needs and practical experience,” says Lotta Kauppinen, Chief Growth Officer at Reround.

The first results of the inventory from the 10-month pilot, and the next steps of the collaboration, will be published in December.
